Haryana election latest update: 23% voting till 11 am, highest polling in Palwal at 28%

 The voting for the 90-member Haryana Assembly is underway on Saturday (October 5). The BJP hopes to buck anti-incumbency to retain power for a third consecutive term and the Congress eyes a comeback after a decade-long hiatus.

More than two crore voters, including 8,821 centurions, are eligible to exercise their franchise in Haryana.

The BJP's campaign was spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who addressed four rallies, where he attacked the Congress on several issues and said they kept every matter important for the country entangled, including the Ram temple issue.

On the last day of campaigning, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi addressed a public meeting in Nuh that had witnessed violence last year after a VHP procession was attacked by a mob, leading to the death of six people, including two home guards and a cleric.

A total of 20,629 polling booths have been set up for the elections, officials said.

Here are the latest updates:

# 22.70% voter turnout recorded till 11 am.

Palwal recorded the highest voter turnout of 27.94%, followed by Jind at 27.20% and Mewat at 25.65%. Panchkula recorded the lowest voter turnout at 13.46%.

 As polling for the 90-member Haryana Assembly constituencies began, many citizens, including prominent leaders, arrived at polling booths early in the morning to exercise their right to vote. Meanwhile, as Haryana went to vote, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday asserted over the BJP's confirmed win in the state while accusing the Congress of deceiving the electorate.

"The wind is in the BJP's favor, the BJP government is being formed for the third time in Haryana, and lotus will bloom in Ladwa with a big margin... No one can stop Congress from dreaming; they also dreamed in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, but they should look at their work and see how they have become an obstacle in development," the CM said.

"The people of the state are understanding the way they have insulted Dalits," he added.

Chandigarh, Polling for 90 Assembly seats in Haryana began Saturday morning amid tight security, with 9.53 poll percentage being recorded in the first two hours.

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker were among the early voters.

Top leaders in the fray are CM Saini, Congress leaders Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Vinesh Phogat, and JJP's Dushyant Chautala.

In all, 1,027 candidates are contesting the election.

The Congress is hoping to return to power after 10 years by dethroning the BJP.

The voting, which began at 7 am, will conclude at 6 pm, while the counting of votes will be taken up on October 8.

According to the Election Commission data, an overall poll percentage of 9.53 per cent was recorded till 9 am.

In Jind, the poll percentage was recorded at 12.71 per cent, 11.10 in Karnal, 10.76 per cent in Rohtak, while in Gurugram and Panchkula, it was 6.10 per cent and 4.08 per cent.

Saini, who is contesting from Ladwa in Kurukshetra, cast his vote in his native village, Mirza, in Ambala district's Naraingarh.

Former Haryana chief minister M L Khattar cast his vote in Karnal, while Manu Bhaker along with her parents, cast her ballot in Goria village in Jhajjar district.

Before he cast his vote, Saini prayed at Guru Ravidas temple and a gurdwara.

Saini later told reporters, "The mood of the people of Haryana is clear, the BJP is going to form government for the third time with a big mandate."

Paris Olympic double-medallist Manu Bhaker appealed to the people, especially the younger ones, to come out and cast their votes.

The 22-year-old athlete cast her vote for the first-ever time, her father Ram Kishan Bhaker said.

Among other early voters who exercised their franchise included BJP's Kuldeep Bishnoi and JJP's Dushyant Chautala.

Meanwhile, the Haryana Jan Sevak party nominee from Meham constituency Balraj Kundu accused former MLA Anand Singh Dangi of tearing his clothes and getting his assistant beaten up at a polling booth.

Kundu, who is the sitting MLA from the Meham assembly seat, alleged that Dangi was "rattled" after sensing the defeat of his son and Congress candidate Balram Dangi.

In a video message, Kundu said he was at polling booth number 134 booth near the bus stand when Dangi tore his clothes and pushed him. "My PA has been beaten up," he further alleged.

According to Haryana's Chief Electoral Officer Pankaj Agarwal, 2,03,54,350 voters, are eligible to exercise their franchise in the election. The electorate includes 8,821 centenarians — 3,283 male and 5,538 female.

Of the total candidates, 101 are women, while 464 are Independent.

A total of 20,632 polling booths have been set up across the state, Agarwal said.

Besides the BJP and the Congress, the key contesting parties are the Aam Aadmi Party and the INLD-BSP and JJP-Azad Samaj Party alliances.

In the last Assembly polls in 2019, the BJP had won 40 seats, the Congress 31 and the Jannayak Janta Party 10.

The Congress has left the Bhiwani seat for its INDIA bloc partner CPI, while the BJP has made way in Sirsa for Haryana Lokhit Party chief Gopal Kanda, who is seeking re-election.

From Tosham, cousins former MP Shruti Choudhry of the BJP and Congress's Anirudh Chaudhary are pitted against each other.

From Dabwali, Devi Lal's grandson Aditya Devi Lal, an INLD candidate, is taking on the JJP's Digvijay Singh Chautala, the great-grandson of the former deputy prime minister.

The BJP has fielded former chief minister late Bhajan Lal's grandson Bhavya Bishnoi from Adampur in Hisar, while its nominee from Ateli in Mahendragarh is Arti Rao, whose father Rao Inderjit Singh is a Union minister.

Savitri Jindal , Ranjit Chautala and Chitra Sarwara are contesting as Independent.

Taking on Dushyant Chautala from Uchana is the Congress's Brijendra Singh, son of former Union minister Birender Singh.

A few rebels from both the Congress and the BJP are also in the fray.

To ensure peaceful voting, 225 companies of Central Armed Police Forces have been deployed across the state, in addition to the deployment of the forces from Haryana Police.

Of the total voters, 1,07,75,957 are men, 95,77,926 are women, and 467 belong to the third gender.

There are 5,24,514 voters aged between 18 and 19 years, and 1,49,142 persons with disability, of whom 93,545 are male, 55,591 are female and six belong to the third gender.

The total number of service voters is 1,09,217 1,04,426 males and 4,791 females.

The voter turnout recorded in the 2019 Assembly polls was around 68 per cent.

In all, 115 polling stations will be managed by women, 114 by young government employees and 87 by persons with disability employees.

In 2019, the BJP formed the government with the support of the JJP, while most of the Independent MLAs had also extended support to the saffron party. However, the JJP's post-poll tie-up with the BJP ended after the latter replaced Manohar Lal Khattar with Saini as the chief minister in March.

Hit Iran's Nuclear Sites First: Donald Trump's Advice To Israel

 Republican White House hopeful Donald Trump said Friday he believes Israel should strike Iran's nuclear facilities in response to the Islamic republic's recent missile barrage.

The former president, speaking at a campaign event in North Carolina, referred to a question posed to Democratic President Joe Biden this week about the possibility of Israel targeting Iran's nuclear program.

"They asked him, what do you think about Iran, would you hit Iran? And he goes, 'As long as they don't hit the nuclear stuff.' That's the thing you want to hit, right?" Trump told a town hall style event in Fayetteville, near a major US military base.

Biden was asked on Wednesday whether he would support strikes against Iranian nuclear sites and the US president told reporters: "The answer is no."

"I think he's got that one wrong," Trump said Friday, in response to a participant's question about the issue. "Isn't that what you're supposed to hit? I mean, it's the biggest risk we have, nuclear weapons," he said.

"When they asked him that question, the answer should have been, hit the nuclear first, and worry about the rest later," Trump added.

"If they're going to do it, they're going to do it. But we'll find out whatever their plans are."

Biden on Wednesday expressed his opposition to such strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities, in response to the firing of nearly 200 Iranian missiles towards Israel.

"We'll be discussing with the Israelis what they're going to do," he said, adding that all G7 members agree Israel has "a right to respond, but they should respond in proportion."

Trump, locked in a tooth-and-nail presidential election battle with US Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, has spoken little about the recent escalation in tensions in the Middle East.

He issued a scathing statement this week, holding Biden and Harris responsible for the crisis.

    A voter turnout of 9.5% has been recorded 9 am in Haryana. The ruling BJP is eyeing a hat-trick while the Congress is hoping to make a comeback in the state after a decade. The other key contestants are Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) and Azad Samaj Party (ASP).

    The Congress left the Bhiwani assembly seat for its INDIA bloc partner Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), while the BJP is not contesting the Sirsa seat, from where Haryana Lokhit Party chief Gopal Kanda is seeking re-election.

    Most seats are likely to see a direct fight between the BJP and the Congress. Prominent among them are Chief Minister Saini (Ladwa), Leader of Opposition Hooda (Garhi Sampla-Kiloi), INLD's Abhay Singh Chautala (Ellenabad), JJP's Dushyant Chautala (Uchana Kalan), BJP's Anil Vij (Ambala Cantt), Capt Abhimanyu (Narnaund) and OP Dhankar (Badli), AAP's Anurag Dhanda (Kalayat) and Congress's Phogat (Julana).

Haryana Assembly elections LIVE: Polling under way as BJP, Congress go head-to-head

The fate of Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Vinesh Phogat of the Congress besides JJP’s Dushyant Chautala and 1027 other candidates will be decided on Saturday (October 5, 2024) as elections to the 90-member Haryana assembly are under way.

The ruling BJP is eyeing a hat-trick of wins in the State while the Congress is hoping to make a comeback after a decade. Counting of votes will be held on October 8.

Haryana’s Chief Electoral Officer Pankaj Agarwal said 2.03 crore voters, including 8,821 centurions, are eligible to exercise their franchise and the voting will be held from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. A total of 1,031 candidates are contesting in all 90 assembly constituencies, including 101 women. Among these candidates, 464 are contesting as independent.

The key contesting parties in the fray are BJP, Congress, AAP, INLD-BSP and JJP-Azad Samaj Party. The high-octane campaign came to an end Thursday (October 3, 2024) evening.

Verdicts announced in Tyre Nichols federal trial; ex-officers taken into custody

 

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A federal jury announced mixed verdicts against three former Memphis Police officers accused in the beating death of Tyre Nichols, finding them guilty on some counts but not guilty on others, including violating Nichols’ civil rights.

“All of them have been convicted of something, and they are all going to jail,” said Tyre Nichols’ mother RowVaughn Wells, outside the federal courthouse in Memphis. “This has been a long journey for our family.”

The verdicts came down at 5 p.m. Thursday after a nearly four-week trial. The results are below:

    Count 1 – Violating Nichols’ Civil Rights
    Count 2 – Deliberate Indifference to Medical Needs
    Count 3 – Conspiracy
    Count 4 – Obstruction

Tadarrius Bean:

    Count 1 – Not Guilty

The three former officers were taken into custody by marshals after the verdicts were announced. They have a detention hearing on Monday to discuss their release. Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 22.

Despite the mixed verdict, with the officers being found not guilty on some of the counts, Nichols’ family said they were satisfied with the outcome. Nichols’ father said he was “elated” and this was “a very good day.”

“The jury found that all of them in some way participated in a crime, and that Tyre Nichols’ death won’t go unaccounted for,” attorney Ben Crump said.

All five officers, including Desmond Mills and Emmitt Martin who have already taken deals and pleaded guilty to federal charges, also face state criminal charges of second-degree murder in the Nichols case.

A date for the state trial has not been set, but Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy said his office is prepared.

“We commend the diligent work of the US Attorney’s Office,” Mulroy said. “The public deserves to know that those who enforce the law are not above the law: if they use excessive force they’ll be held accountable. While the verdict may not be everything hoped for, we’re fully prepared to move forward with the State’s case. We will await sentencing in federal court, consult with US Attorney’s Office counsel, and take appropriate steps in state court.”

“My hope for our community is that we continue to respond in peace and that we keep Tyre’s legacy at the heart of our collective reaction to this verdict,” Memphis Mayor Paul Young said in a statement.

“Today’s verdict brings a measure of justice for Tyre Nichols’ family, who have endured unimaginable pain since his tragic and senseless death,” said state Sen. London Lamar (D-Memphis). “While no verdict can bring Tyre back, the conviction of these officers is a critical step in holding those responsible accountable.”

The jury started deliberating on Thursday morning. Judge Mark Norris read the jury’s instructions, and the prosecution and defense finished presenting their cases with closing arguments Wednesday night.

The prosecution wrapped up their case by telling the jury that Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, and Justin Smith “Beat him (Nichols), left him to die, and tried to cover it up.”

“They have blamed everyone but themselves,” said prosecuting attorney Kathryn Gilbert. “They wanted it to be a beatdown, and they made sure that it was.”

Meanwhile, defense attorneys argued over the last four weeks of testimony that the former officers participated in a “high-risk” traffic stop involving a suspect who was resisting and under the influence of drugs. Their cases heavily focused on the officer’s training, or in their words, lack of training.

They argued that the officers were blinded by pepper spray, the kicks and punches to Nichols were consistent with MPD policy, and they aided Nichols by calling for medical on the scene.

“These guys are doing life or death work,” said Bean’s attorney, John Keith Perry. “They were serious business and they were doing their job.”

Bean, Haley, and Smith faced the same four federal counts – Violating Tyre Nichols’ Civil Rights, Deliberate Indifference to his medical needs, Conspiracy to cover up their use of unlawful force, and Obstruction by intentionally omitting information to those writing reports on the arrest of Nichols.

The first two counts of the indictment carry a maximum penalty of life in prison. The last two carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

On January 7, 2023, Tyre Nichols was severely beaten during a traffic stop in Hickory Hill, right down the road from his home. Three days later, on January 10, he died from blunt force trauma to the head, according to an autopsy report.

The five officers accused of the beating were fired by the Memphis Police Department and indicted in state court just days after the incident. Body camera and Skycop camera footage were released of the beating, and a few months later, a federal indictment followed.

Lawmakers are already looking at how this case can change state law on body cam procedures and closely watching the outcome of this trial.

“I feel the pain. And we’ve got the opportunity to put things in place in terms of legislation, in terms of best practices for the Memphis Police Department and other law enforcement agencies,” said Tennessee Representative G.A. Hardaway.

Blasts Shake Beirut as Israel Targets Remaining Hezbollah Leaders, Officials Say

 Israeli warplanes carried out airstrikes at midnight on Thursday on an underground bunker where senior Hezbollah leaders were believed to be meeting, including the presumed successor to the group’s recently assassinated chief, according to three Israeli officials.

A series of huge explosions rocked the densely populated neighborhoods just south of Beirut as the strikes hit. Shock waves shook buildings across the Lebanese capital.

The Israeli officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence, said the military had information suggesting leaders were meeting in a bunker in the Dahiya, as the suburbs south of Beirut are known. Those leaders included Hashem Safieddine, a cousin and possible successor of Hassan Nasrallah, the longtime Hezbollah chief who was assassinated in a similar attack last week, the officials said

Israel is now carrying out major operations on multiple fronts. The explosions in the Dahiya, a stronghold of the militant group, came shortly after an Israeli warplane carried out an airstrike in Tulkarm, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Palestinian health officials said at least 18 people were killed.

Israel has employed numerous airborne drone attacks in the West Bank since Oct. 7, but it has generally reserved its fighters and bombers for Gaza.

In Gaza itself, the Israeli military carried out numerous strikes on Thursday, and local health officials reported in the afternoon that at least 99 people had been killed over the previous 24 hours, one of the highest daily tolls in the past three months.

There are signs that Israel may be preparing to intensify the ground invasion into Lebanon that it began this week as it battles Hezbollah. The Israeli military warned residents of more than 20 towns and cities in southern Lebanon on Thursday to leave their homes immediately and not to move south toward the Israeli border. And this week, the military said it was sending a fifth division of soldiers to the border area with Lebanon.

Efforts by Hezbollah to strike Israel continued to be thwarted by the country’s formidable air defenses. The Israeli military said that at least 200 rockets had been launched at Israel from Lebanon on Thursday, but there were no immediate reports of injuries, according to Israel’s emergency services, Magen David Adom.

Israeli leaders were continuing to weigh a military response to Iran, which on Tuesday launched nearly 200 missiles at targets across Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, who has vowed retribution for the missile attack, said on Wednesday that his country was engaged in “a tough war against Iran’s axis of evil.”

President Biden, in an apparent attempt to stem the escalation and broadening of conflicts in the Middle East, said on Wednesday that he would not support Israel striking Iran’s nuclear sites. On Thursday, oil prices jumped after President Biden, asked if he would support an Israeli strike on Iran’s oil facilities, said: “We’re discussing that. I think that would be a little … anyway.”

Here is what else to know:

    Continuing strikes: The Israeli military said on Thursday morning it had struck about 200 sites in Lebanon overnight, including local government offices in Bint Jbeil, a large town near the border with Israel, where it killed 15 people it described as Hezbollah fighters.

    Iran sanctions: Mr. Biden told reporters that leaders of the Group of 7 nations had agreed in a call on Wednesday to impose new sanctions on Iran for the missile strike. He said the other leaders on the call — of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan — agreed that Israel had the right to respond but that it must be proportional.

    Hamas losses: The Israeli military kept up its attacks on Iranian-backed Hamas in Gaza, saying on Thursday that it had killed three top Hamas officials in a previously undisclosed airstrike three months ago, including Rawhi Mushtaha, one of the closest confidants of Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader. Hamas did not immediately comment on Israel’s claim, but it has generally not confirmed or denied the deaths of its officials in the conflict.

Despite Iran’s bluster, anxiety is spreading among its people over possible war with Israel.

As Iran awaits possible retaliation strikes by Israel, its senior officials threatened to hit back with force and the armed forces were placed on highest alert. But in interviews and on social media and virtual town hall discussions, many Iranians said anxiety about an unpredictable war with Israel was spreading.

In telephone interviews with more than a dozen Iranians in different cities, men and women across political divides said they did not want or support a war with Israel or the United States. They said that their lives were already a struggle because of a terrible economy, American sanctions, corruption and oppression. War could exacerbate these hardships and plunge the country into more chaos.

“Nobody I know has prepared for a possible war,” Mahdieh, 41, an engineer in Tehran, said in a phone interview. “We are jarred. Let us have our normal life. We are not willing or want to enter a war era.” She asked that her last name not be published out of fear of retribution. She said she and her husband had prepared an emergency bag with their documents in case they needed to leave Tehran.

A message shared widely on social media by many Iranians read, “NO WAR,” and “Which bunkers will you use to shield the people? How will you repair damaged infrastructure? There is no good in war, do not lay ruin to Iran.”

On Monday Iran launched 180 ballistic missiles into Israel in retaliation for Israel’s killing of its top regional ally, the Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah, that of a senior Iranian general in Beirut and that of the political leader of Hamas in Tehran. Israel has said it plans to respond by attacking Iran; its potential targets include military bases for the Revolutionary Guards Corps and oil refineries.

President Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran traveled to Qatar on Wednesday to attend a conference of the Organization of Islamic Countries, where he said that Iran did not seek war, saying “there are no winners in war, we know this.” And then he warned, “Iran will respond stronger if Israel makes the slightest mistake.”

Iran’s mission to the United Nations said in a statement that Tehran and Washington had exchanged messages through their official intermediary in Tehran in the aftermath of the attack on Israel. The statement said that Iran considered any country that assisted Israel in an attack on Iran “an accomplice and a legitimate target.”

According to two Iranian officials, who are familiar with the war planning and were not authorized to speak publicly, Iran had asked Russia for cooperation with satellite intelligence ahead of an Israeli strike.

But despite the official saber rattling, even some supporters of the government who had cheered the attacks on Israel were now confronting the realities of an all-out war that could take out infrastructure and harm the economy. Facing that possibility, some said they hoped Israel’s response would be limited and any tit-for-tat strikes would end quickly.

“We had to slap it [Israel] in the face, otherwise it would keep moving forward,” Hamidreza Jalaeipour, a prominent sociologist close to the reformist faction, said in a discussion on the application Clubhouse. “If there is a war, it will be imposed on us.”

Mr. Jalaeipour said he predicted that in the event of war the majority of Iranians would rally behind the flag to defend their country forcefully and put divisions aside.

But discontent against the government runs deep, and in waves of protests, notably in the women-led uprising in 2022, demonstrators called for the toppling of the ruling clerics. The loyalty and ideological fervor of the early years of the revolution — when even teenagers volunteered for the front lines of the eight-year war the country was then fighting with Iraq — has given way to despair and frustration with the status quo.

Some opponents of the government said they were angry that Iran had struck Israel in the first place, placing the lives and safety of its own citizens at risk for a cause outside its own borders. In anti-government protests in previous years, people have chanted, “No to Gaza, no to Lebanon, my life for Iran.”

And now that Israeli attacks seemed likely and imminent, the government had not announced any emergency provisions to prepare the population for war.

“Most of us are not happy about the interference of the Islamic Republic in the region and its so-called proxies. People do not want their national resources to be spent abroad,” said Mahan, a 50-year-old doctor in the northern city of Rasht. “The most pressing feeling these days, both for myself and the majority of friends and people I know, is the fear and worry of war.”

Israel says it rescued a Yazidi woman in Gaza taken captive by ISIS as a child.

The Israeli military said on Thursday that it had rescued a 21-year-old Yazidi woman who had been held in captivity in the Gaza Strip after being captured by ISIS in Iraq as a child more than a decade ago, describing the operation as a “complex operation” involving the United States, Jordan and others.

The woman, Fawzia Amin Sido, appeared to be “more or less” in fine physical shape but was “not in a good mental situation,” Brig. Gen. Elad Goren, who leads the Israeli military’s humanitarian-civilian effort in the Gaza Strip, said in a briefing with reporters on Thursday.

He said that she had endured significant trauma over a long period, including rape and abuse. She received food and basic treatment in Israel, he said, and U.S. officials then escorted her to Jordan by car, from which she was returned to her family in Iraq. An Israeli diplomat, David Saranga, posted a video on social media showing Ms. Sido’s return, and said her captor was “a Palestinian Hamas-ISIS member.” The New York Times has not verified the video.
